National Software develops and maintains software that imports data from excel, prints and electronically files information returns. The software performs those 3 tasks (import, print and e-file) really well.
I provide technical support for National Software and write and blog frequently about information returns and the IRS. I have worked with information returns since 2000. Back in the day, clients purchased 1098 and 1099 software to print data on top of the red-ink forms to print and mail to the IRS and print Copy B on plain paper to mail to clients. A lot has changed in the past 15 years. The IRS developed the FIRE System (where FIRE stands for File Information Returns Electronically) in 2006 and since then business has changed. People buy software to electronically transmit data directly to the IRS. A wide variety of forms can be electronically filed through the IRS FIRE System from the 1042-S to 1097-BTC, 1098 forms, 1099 forms, 3921, 3922, 5498, 8027 for tip income. Reporting health coverage under the Affordable Care Act is done using IRS Forms 1095-B and Form 1095-C and their respective transmittal summaries. The 1095 forms can be electronically transmitted through the IRS AIR System where AIR stands for Affordable Care Act Information Returns.
