Is the IRS FIRE System going away?
Eventually yes. The IRS FIRE (Filing Information Returns Electronically) system will gradually be supplemented and, in some cases, replaced by the newer
IRIS (Information Returns Intake System) platform. The IRS has been modernizing its electronic filing systems, and IRIS represents a significant step
in that effort.
IRS FIRE System: Current Role
• Launched in the 1980s.• The FIRE system is the legacy platform for filing information returns electronically, such as Forms 1099, 1042-S, and W-2G.
• It has been widely used by businesses and tax professionals for decades.
• As of 2025, it is still operational and remains the primary system for electronic submission.
Introduction of the IRIS System
• Launched in 2023.• The IRIS platform was introduced to modernize the process of filing information returns, offering a more user-friendly, secure, and efficient system.
• IRIS focuses on streamlining the process, particularly for smaller businesses and filers who previously needed third-party software to use the FIRE system.
The IRS will transition towards IRIS as part of a broader effort to modernize its electronic filing systems. Filers should prepare for a gradual shift and take advantage of the enhanced features of IRIS.
