How to close a file from IRS FIRE System?
GOOD, NOT RELEASED
Submitting a file and getting a file status of GOOD means that the file is GOOD but not released. It
takes anywhere from 10 to 12 days before your data file is released. You can call the IRS at any time
within that 10-12 day window and ask them to make a file a BAD which is has not been released BAD. You can
then submit a new replacement file. IRS FIRE help can be reached toll-free 866-455-7438. You can't
make a file BAD once it has been released. You can efile a correction to void those records.
BAD
You can also close a BAD file by calling the IRS at 866-455-7438. Specifically your are asking the
IRS to close the file and that no replacement is expected. You can double check that the file has been closed
by logging back into the IRS FIRE System and click on Check File Status and search for closed files. You
will see something like this:
where the closed files are higlighted in yellow.
