Does the hyphenation of the TIN number matter?
Yes.
The TIN and TIN TYPE are efiled to the IRS. If the TIN has 1-hyphen or dash, then its an EIN. If the TIN has 2-hyphens, then the TYPE is SSN. And if the TIN has no hyphens, the TIN TYPE is unknown.
When you print Copy B, the software replaces the first 5 digits of the TIN with X if there is 0 or 2 hyphens contained in the TIN. If there is 1-hyphen, then its assumed to be an EIN and the TIN is not masked.
