Step 1: Make Sure the Charity is Qualified

Use the information from Form 1098-C to determine your deduction:
- If the charity sold the vehicle without significant use or improvement, your deduction is the sale amount.
- If the vehicle was used or improved by the charity, you may deduct the fair market value, as stated on the form.
Step 5: Report the Donation on Your Tax Return
Attach Form 1098-C to your Form 1040 when filing if your deduction exceeds $500. Enter the donation information on Schedule A of Form 1040 under “Gifts to Charity.” You’ll need to itemize deductions to claim the vehicle donation.
Step 6: Keep Copies of All Documentation
For IRS records and your own, keep copies of Form 1098-C, the vehicle title transfer, and any other documentation related to the donation.
Additional Considerations
- IRS Form 8283: If your donation exceeds $500, you may also need to file Form 8283, which is required for non-cash charitable contributions.
- Special Rules for Fair Market Value: For unique or classic vehicles with higher-than-average market value, you may want to obtain an independent appraisal if you believe the value is higher than the charity’s sale price. This may require additional documentation and approval from the IRS if your deduction exceeds certain limits.
